Out of the box Windchill install, publisher queues filling up, add more Worker Agents ?

The business I work at runs an 'out of the box' Windchill 10.1 M050 installation, with Creo as its CAD application, and I've recently been given the task of improving it's performance. One thing I'm noticing is that the Publisher queues get fuller as the week progresses and don't get down to zero (or close to it) until the week has ended (we have no design engineers working over the weekend).

For example right now, lunch time on a Friday, the L queue has 2,422 entries and just under 2,000 each in PublisherQueue1 and 2.

We split our Windchill installation over two Windows 2008 R2 servers, which I believe is due to some historic uncertainty over Oracle licensing, and as of a few months ago both of these servers are now virtual machines in a VMware cluster. Both of these virtual machines / servers never break into a sweat (CPU / storage / Network), however the queues just fill up and up.

From what little I understand (I've supported many CAD system over the years in my IT career but never Windchill until now) is what's processing the entries in the queue a 'Worker Agent' ?. We currently have just one of these, and if it is the agent can addtional ones be added to service PublisherQueue1 and 2 ? (we have the performance capacity for it).

Thanks.

This could also be a release timing issue. The latest CPS released after the next version release.

I have been testing a system with PDMLink 11.0 M010, and I applied CPS4 awhile ago because I had read the FAQ about CPS which states "Customers are strongly encouraged to schedule regular CPS updates...".  Applying CPS4 has left me unable to update to 11.0 M020.

I am also one of those that install the CPS updates as they come out. I think it is extremely short sighted of PTC that one can't update the latest CPS patch of a previous build with the latest CPS patch of the newest build. You have to skip installing 1 or 2 months of CPS patches on the previous build before updating to the newest build with its latest CPS.

So to update to M020 you will need to do the following:

  • do not install any more CPS's on M010
  • wait until M020 CPSxx to update to M020.
    • The "Windchill Supported Upgrade Paths" document doesn't say yet which CPS
    • probably CPS01 or CPS02

If I do not have Requirements Link or Integrity, should Traceabilty Tab on objects be turned off?

I just complete first rehearsal and noticed this new tab.  I know its related to RequirementsLink and Integrity but I do not own them. Should I just disable this tab in the preferences?  Does it have any purpose outside of those modules?  I do not want to use something I am not licenses for.

The Worker is simply a non-graphic Creo Parametric with a ProE_FoundationVis licence that is supposed to run on the server and do all the publish and visualization jobs your Windchill may require.

It seems like you only have a single Worker set up but two PublisherQueues allowed, which makes it not balanced in case the worker can't keep up with both queues before timeouts some entries in one or the other queue fail to process. Have a look at WVS Job Monitor for noneventfailed jobs.

On our setup we run two Workers and have 3 PublisherQueues. For a single Worker PTC recommends to have only 1 PublisherQueue.

I find this whole publishing mechanism for Windchill pretty specific and i guess this is not something you will see elsewhere. If you can get a training for it then i recommend doing that first.

Yes, you can just turn it off since you can not do anything with it anyway as long you don't manage them.

As long it is visible it might confuse people. Just post the preference if you have it at hand.

oh, I have the same problem. I installed CPS05 because finally a bug in the change task is being solved. Two weeks later M020 is coming out and now we have to wait for 1 or 2 month until finally the CPS is being released which allows us to update to the M020.

@PTC: Please mark in advance those CPS which are not able to update to a maintenance release!

Instead of using FTP, you can use a shared folder.

Can i track tasks done by a user as Site admin?

I am trying to backtrack tasks done by a user to clarify a scenario.

Is this possible with site admin access?

I am supporting Windchill and the user seems to be difficult to contact.

Pls provide a solution ;I could reset his password and backtrack but that does not seem like a feasible plan.

Best way for this may be a simple query builder report - which ties together:

- user (input)

- work item and related details (the Task)

- PBO (what the Task relates to via the workflow process)

If you want to use suggestion made by Mike, you should join this group Reporting

There is a document Resource for reporting with lots of query builder report ready to use, divided in sections.

Take a look at Promotion and Workflow.

I looked again this morning, and it seems to be there exactly as expected.  The changes must have taken a while to take effect in the system?  I don't know, but it is fine now.  Thanks!

Last post for clarification.

The issue is the incorporation.  My system does not let me edit an instance if it has been incorporated.  If you remove the incorporation it works as expected.

Anders Kullenberg, one of my very competent colleagues, brought this to my attention:

With Windchill 11.0 M020 comes a new wvs property that seems to adress this issue. It is possible to enable the primary owner association to latest WTPart iteration when publish.representable.owner.usefirstiteration is set to false.

I've run a few tests on this with my 11 M020 test server and can confirm that this indeed solves these issues. Now it seems it's just a matter of getting the customer upgraded to the latest Windchill release.

For sites that have installed 11.0 M010 CPS04, CPS05 or CPS06, the release of 11.0 M020 CPS01 will be required.  This release is scheduled for January 11, 2016 and the CPS product calendar has been recently updated to reflect this release.    To enable better future planning, we will update the Windchill Update/Upgrade Path document to be forward looking.

Just to start this up again.

Has anybody out there got something that can convert to PDF but not using Adobe?
