6.2.6 Software Compatibility:
Hello,
we are running windchill  6.2.6 on HP Unix 11 & oracle 9 and looking to upgrade the OS and oracle version to the possible upward compatible versions, can anyone suggest which could be the possible latest OS & oracle I can move on to continue running windchill 6.2.6.

I am looing for some reference who already tried and currently running this old server or have suggestions from their experience. Thanks in advance!!!

Why would you not want to migrate to a newer version of Windchill?

Windchill 6.2.6 has been obsolete for 10 years.

I doubt there is a newer Oracle version for 6.2.6 as Windchill 9 required Oracle 10.

I have minimal experience with HP-UX (thank goodness).

Thanks Ben.

We need to keep running this server for now, till it be migrated. To overcome OS & oracle issues which possibly crashing the server we want this to updated to possible latest one and yes I understand it's hard to say which of the latest software (OS & DB),  the 6.2.6 will continue to run.

Re: Two different Quantity columns in Material content report

In case you never got this answered, I was looking at this just yesterday while trying to figure out if my content reports were actually multiplying my substances by the quantity in E (turns out, it is not. not in content report of the REACH report). The quantity in Column R is the quantity the supplier puts in the subproduct section of IPC 2.0.

<SubProduct numberOfInstances="2" xmlns="http://webstds.ipc.org/175x/2.0">

  <ProductID itemName="Contact 2" xmlns="http://webstds.ipc.org/175x/2.0">

  <Amount UOM="mg" value="16" xmlns="http://webstds.ipc.org/175x/2.0"/>

  </ProductID>

In the part, it does do the math for the weights as you can the declaration states that there are 2 contacts at 16 mg each and WPA put the mass as 0.032 g.

In our set-up, we don't see this same math then multiplying by the quantity in column E. Would love to know if others have that same problem or if it is just the way ours is configured to our PLM.

In case if you are aware of it. Kindly let me know the same.

Re: What are the differences between Watermarks and Stamps on PDFs ?

Tom,

I know it says that in the manual, but as is often the case the manuals can be misleading when the author, or reader (or both) fall into the trap of using a logical fallacy, eg. just because something is true it doesn't mean it is the whole truth, and similarly the apparent converse of what is stated as true isn't always not true !.

I was told by someone working in PTC's 2nd line support (or R&D), "the download delegate may actually be triggered by some actions other than download". To get the updated information to show in session is another matter - sometimes it just happens, sometimes (in Creo) you need to do an Update - so we built a macro to do this in one click, and as I said in SolidWorks WGM it updates these attributes in session if you save twice - so we built a macro that saves twice !

What I described is what we had working in v10.0 and still have in v10.2, and I don't think it is affected by the introduction of "universal upload" in v10.2 and the consequential changes (or fixes) to the behaviour of re-add to Workspace as described pretty well in CS 172371.  We see advantages to using upload upon save and no disadvantages.

I am happy that this works very well for MCAD, but it doesn't help at all with updating and displaying title block information on ECAD drawings as those applications (Mentor Graphics or Creo Schematics) don't appear to have any Attributes/File-Properties/Parameters that can be mapped to Windchill.  This is the problem I am trying to address, and would welcome any suggestions for how to do so, either in the native files or in the PDF files - which could either be copies of drawings, or distribution records with file attachments (eg, Gerber files).

File Name Save As History?

We have Windchill 10.1 M040. I'm trying to dig into when I made an update to some parts and where some new ones came from to correct them. I took a look at the history on windchill and it allows to view the save as history, however, it doesn't tell me the file name of the original object. It tells me the file name for things like revision history. Is this just a quirk or can I actually find the file name?

I have created an additional tab named 'Additional History' and customized it to show file rename, save-as and saved to information.

It does show the save-as history (WC10.0m040), but I'm not near Windchill today to give you better instructions.

As far as I know, PTC does not offer certification on any of their products anymore. The used to offer them with Pro/Engineer and Wildfire.

About the only thing you can get now is a piece of paper saying you have completed a training class.

Thank you! I never messed around with new tabs and sure enough there was a convenient option for save as history with the file name.

Re: How to bypass windchill services from Windows firewall settings?

Communication between the master and replica servers is done over HTTP/HTTPS. You just need to open whatever port apache is listening on from the firewall (usually 80 for HTTP or 443 for HTTPS), and there should be no communication issues between the master and replica.

Re: Calling All WVS Admins: Do you still need the PDF Admin/Install Guides or does the Help Center do the job?

Hi Tom,

Do your comments regarding search reliability apply to the search tools for both the Windchill 11.0 Help Center (currently Arbortext based) and the Creo View 3.1 Help Center (ePulbisher based) versions?

Note that for the Creo View 4.0 Help Center, I've asked that the results indicate which guide the hits are in, to add context before selecting.

Also, I guess you are aware that the KDB Search tool is now also indexing Help Center topics, at least for the Windchill 11.0 Help Center currently... this search is also likely to be more effective than the one embedded in the Windchill Help Center UI.

Regarding the merging of the content, this is an ongoing process that I am assisting PTC Tech Pubs to complete for Visualization and I'm working through the WVS Admin guide release-by-release to improve the structure and content.  Are there any aspects of the Help Center docs for Viz that I should be looking at in this respect?

As per my response to Tom, this should improve for the Creo View ePublisher Hep Center at the next release, with the tags that at least provide you with the context of the topics.

I do take your point regarding secure server environments, however but if the Help Centers could also be deployed within a customer's intranet, would this help here?  Also, the move to ePublisher for Creo View was partly driven by its better support for the hand-held devices, allow one to take a tablet with access to the company wifi with you. Does this help?

How to share EPDM product data with outside partners?

$

I am trying to understand the best practices for sharing product data within WC with companies/partners/suppliers/co-developers outside our company. At present, the only method I can find is to 'pack' the some or all of product data (meta data, assembly & parts, drawings, and all other relevant data) and send it to the recipient. And when there is an update to the data that has been shared, then do this all over again.

On the recipient's side, they have to 'unpack' the data and load it into their system. We have a few scenarios here:
1. The recipient has WC+Creo - they may be able to take the data 'as is' with very little massaging to get into their system.

2. The recipient has PDM/PLM/CAD from another vendor - they have to find a way to "import" the data into their system, and this may lead to data being neither imported into their PLM system or their CAD system.
3. The recipient has only CAD system - they have to grab the CAD data out of the 'pack' and use it, perhaps after translating it into their native CAD system, if they arent using Creo.

And all of them have to this over again the moment something changes at the sending end to either the metadata or the CAD data.

I would like to know if the user community has evolved a set of best practices for each scenario. I would appreciate if people can share their thoughts on how they would deal with this situation in their company.

We have no wireless access to the secured systems. We cannot even use wireless mouse and keyboards. Our cell phones are in a cabinet outside the work area next the badge reader for access. The first 2 questions I get when opening a call are: 1) Can we do a WebEx? and 2) Can you send me those files? The answer is a flat NO, it is not possible.

So while PTC is developing all these nifty web-based tools and cloud computing with maintenance dollars, my company will never get to take advantage of them, yet we pay the same, and get less, for our maintenance dollars.

The advantage of PDF manuals also means I can take them home easier for reading. (They make great 'when you can't sleep' reading.☺)

I tend to go throught these huge PDFs using my ebook reader. If i try to read a manual of this size from a computers's webbrowser i can't ever be able to read the manual as a whole or at least it's significant part in a reasonable amount of time.

The reason is very simple, i could read a book or an ebook from the reader all day long, but I can't ever be able to read the same amounts from the computer. So, yeah, keep publishing the PDFs please.

The whole purpose of this discussion thread was to get your input as customers, as to whether PDF are still of value... what I'm hearing from you, Ben, is a very load YES and a similar response from Tom, so far.  Just FYI, my immediate response to this internal process was also a NO, PDF Admin documentation still has its place.

I'll be combining this with some web statistics to determine the number of views of these PDF's but would prefer to ad 'colour' to these stats from customer feedback... the more the better.
