I like just removing the external reference in Creo with the Reference Viewer. If the reference is not available for removal, it must be part of a feature that was created with an external reference dependency. As an example, a CutOut feature can be made as a copy or reference. If created as a reference, you'll always have to carry around the extref. If you want to get rid of it, you'll have to redefine the feature and remove the dependency.
